Abuse In Nursing Homes

Abuse in nursing homes – it’s a very real and very sad reality of life.  It’s what we’d like to talk about here at AbuseInNursingHomes.org.

Preventing nursing home abuse may seem difficult.  You aren’t there every moment of every day to watch over your relative or loved one – how can you know they aren’t suffering from abuse or neglect in their nursing home?

We have some ideas on how to prevent abuse in nursing homes.

How Many People Suffer From Abuse In Nursing Homes?

These nursing home abuse statistics might shock you – I know they certainly shocked me!

According to the NCEA:

…more than 500,000 Americans aged 60 and over were victims of domestic abuse in 1996.

Wait, it gets worse….

This study also found that only 16 percent of the abusive situations are referred for help – 84 percent remain hidden.

Main cause for 84% of these cases NOT being helped? Lack of surveillance – no one even knew their elderly loved one was being abused.

Breaks my heart.

Consider putting your OWN surveillance in the nursing home room of your elderly friends and loved ones so you can SEE what is happening to them when no one else is around.
